Look at this car. Look at this car. Isn’t it neato as heck? Try to find a better car.
( Full disclosure: I like the 3rd generation Subaru Outback, mostly the XT, and I'm also in a really good mood. Mostly because Outback)

That’s easy. Take that car, ditch the unnecessary body cladding, ugly roof rack, jacked up suspension, and truck-ish tires.
Now that’s better.

Did I do it right?

I’m sorry to inform you, sir, but it is no Subaru Outback. Close. Very close.

37% too Swedish, I do apologize.

VW Passat Wagon B5.5
(Full Disclosure: It’s better. I also might own one.)

I see where you’re coming from with this, but the only problem is that it is no Subaru Outback. You get one free pass.
![]() 06/18/2015 at 22:46 |

I could say the same exact thing to you.
![]() 06/18/2015 at 22:47 |

If I could fit in the 3rd gen, I’d be driving this today.

What about now?

Couldn’t agree more.
(Mine)

I have a Legacy and agree the Outback wagon looks better.

Ford Flex Ecoboost. 365 HP and 350 lb/ft of torque. It’ll hold more people & stuff than your little wagon, in greater comfort, and blow it off the road all day long. And, I think, looks way cool. Hmmph, so there.
![]() 06/18/2015 at 23:26 |

But I like the body cladding. And the extra tall is important for reasons. And by reason I mean rocks. Also the tires are the same diameter as what you’d get on, say, a new Chrysler 200.

My friend has that exact car in white. It’s great when he isn’t running it into shit. Like my car.

There’s a story here, and I kinda wanna hear it
![]() 06/18/2015 at 23:45 |

But will it recce?
![]() 06/18/2015 at 23:48 |

Well yeah, it’s the Outback without the wannabe-SUV nonsense that makes the Outback worse than the Legacy.
![]() 06/18/2015 at 23:49 |

My friend thought it would be hilarious to slowly bump into the back of my car when I stopped, Top Gear style.

The Outback is better at having more body roll.
![]() 06/18/2015 at 23:49 |

I don’t drive on rocks.
Lower is better.
![]() 06/18/2015 at 23:55 |

We used to have a pair of old beater Caravans, that was a regular occurrence at red lights.
![]() 06/18/2015 at 23:57 |

It's a wagon, I think we're past concerns about body roll.

I want to agree with you, but low cars can’t rally, and rally is the best thing a car can do.

Wow that is a nice Subaru Outback. One could say it’s the best Subaru Outback.
![]() 06/19/2015 at 00:04 |

Yes, one could indeed say that.

Just tonight, it dawned on me that I want to buy an Outback for the sole purpose of swapping the letters around to read “Backout”.

The Subaru Outback is 420% more reliable, but it doesn’t have a really complicated twin-turbo V6, making the Audi more interesting my a small amount.
Pass.

B5.5 Passat wagon’s are the best Passat wagon. Fact.
![]() 06/19/2015 at 00:09 |

Cool cool but no Subaru.
(I really like the Flex, especially EcoBoost)
![]() 06/19/2015 at 00:10 |

You should do it. It is the best idea, so why not do it with the best car?

Hello, I am your doctor, and I have decided to cut the bottom half of your legs off for Subaru Outback operation. I do apologize if this causes any kinds of problems, but don’t we both see the properties here.” -Your doctor, 2015

If I could choose to be shorter than 6’10”, believe me I would do it.

After owning a Legacy GT sedan...
If I had had an Outback XT Limited 5-speed wagon instead... I might still have it, but it probably would have also started nickel-and-dime torture on my maintenance budget.
Turbo reliability iffy-ness, the expense of a timing belt change, and suspension that just refused to stand up to a beating from rough public roads, and an inability to accept any cargo with the sedan body style and fixed rear seats ultimately made it time to trade off my old Legacy GT Limited, but I did love that car while I had it, despite it’s problems.
If there had been an Outback 3.6R Spec.B with the 3.6 flat-6 engine, backed by the VTD 6-speed in the Legacy Spec.B, and with bilstein long-travel struts... I definitely would still have it, but that mix of qualities did not make it out of the Subaru factory together ever.
If it were World Rally Blue, I would be posting a picture of it here, instead of this K2Gear modified JDM Outback XT that is sacrificially lowered. Somewhere between Outback stock ride height, and Legacy GT stock ride height, with a tad bit of forward rake, is the sweet spot for an Outback all-road type vehicle. Sedans had a bit of sag to the rear suspension, and wagons were even a little worse, with stock suspension, making the rear of the car ever so slightly lower than the front. Lowering the front to establish the proper rake, or even lifting the rear with strut-top spacers does fix that.
BL-BP series Legacies and Outbacks were such nice cars... with a few niggling issues, but everything afterward has been the epitome of bland. Subaru has squandered and left so much potential un-tapped, it is ridiculous.
That K2 Gear front end is an M5 copy, but it looks better on these cars, especially a Blitzen, than any BMW.

Yeah that is quite tall. But, would it be possible to fit A racing seat in? I bet you would fit, then. Well, at the same time it isn’t really worth it.
Also, is the meet still on?
![]() 06/19/2015 at 11:35 |

You rally, I drive like an idiot on hopefully-deserted, but paved, country back roads.

“Hopefully deserted.” You're definitely doing something like an idiot.

Why yes, yes I am.

racing seats are just too uncomfortable.
Meet is still on. we only have 3 people so far, 4 including myself. I need to message those who said they could go, to conform that they can actually go.
![]() 06/19/2015 at 14:19 |

Alright, four people is 400% better than zero people. Where was the time and date, again, I accidentally deleted the email.

June 28th, at some point in the afternoon. Location will be somewhere at friendly shopping center.

Yes, especially the bits between RDU and Durham. This is why we typically take 64 and 421 out to Greensboro.
